New MacBook Pros Have Arrived
The speculation is over. Check ‘em out, in 15″ and 17″ flavors. To entice you further, Apple just fired up its “Major in Mac” promotion, in which Apple gives you a free iPod nano or iPod (via a rebate) with a new Mac purchase. It lasts until mid-September.

I’m having a hard time deciding between the Macbook and the Macbook Pro. I think the Pro is too expensive, and I won’t need its advanced graphics card for law school. On the other hand, I’m worried that the 13 inch Macbook screen might be too small for prolonged use. Do you have an advice?

The screen size is usually a matter of personal choice. In my experience, the 15″ PowerBook I bring to class is about the maximum size a law school lecture hall row table can accommodate. There are times when I wish I were using the 12″ PowerBook. In my opinion, that was one of the best laptops Apple ever made. The form factor was just about perfect for situations like in-class note-taking.
That said, more screen real estate can be quite valuable when you’re out of the lecture hall, particularly if you like to keep several windows open while you work. As for the graphics card, I agree with you. Unless you’re going to be doing a lot of stuff on the side with your laptop, for law school you simply won’t need anything more than what the MacBook provides.
A couple of friends at school have MacBooks and love them. One even does a fair amount of video work with his. The MacBooks are nothing to sneeze at.
Do any MacBook owners have comments?

…who is very curious about this subject as well. I have pretty much comitted myself to a Macbook Pro, but my decision is based largely in part on the screen. Not only for the extra “real estate” as Erik put it, but also because the matte finish seems to be a bit gentler on my eyes.
As far as the rest of the hardware goes I am sure that I can’t go wrong, but is it worth the extra $$ just for a screen?

John,
It does make you wish you could test drive both screens, doesn’t it? I’ve never owned a laptop with a glossy screen. I’m not opposed to them per se, but not having used one makes me wonder if I’d find it distracting.
