iPhone Reports

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Friday, June 29th is iPhone Day. The long-awaited wonder device will finally ship.

I’ve read reviews by Mossberg, Levy, and Pogue. Broadly, they all agree that this is a technological marvel. It has a few drawbacks, but the one thing they all agree needs work isn’t the phone itself. The biggest hangup seems to be AT&T’s EDGE network. Frankly I imagine myself using WiFi much more often than a mobile carrier’s Internet access, no matter how fast they claim it works. But since I’m not an AT&T customer, I won’t be finding out any time soon, either. I’ll have to just watch this 20-minute Apple demo over and over again. Pathetic, aren’t I?

The strong rumor is that Apple is already busy working on the next iPhone, which is a smart idea. The iPod was successful in large part because Apple iterated so quickly, refining existing versions and creating new versions to serve different purposes. Hopefully Apple will follow the same pattern with the iPhone.

If you have your own theories about the iPhone, or if you get hold of one, feel free to comment!

I love the iPhone. I want the iPhone. But unfortunately, its of limited use to me because it does not appear to have a To Do list. Has anybody heard or seen otherwise?

My guess is we’ll start seeing third-party apps to fit that obvious opening before too long, Matthew. But in the mean time, I haven’t heard of any to do list capability in the iPhone.

A slick little iPhone app that could import from and export to iGTD or OmniFocus could be quite handy. I imagine developers everywhere are dying to get their hands on iPhones to see what they’ll be able to develop. I also am guessing that some of the online apps for note-taking and to-do lists would be immediately useful on an iPhone. But that’s just an unsubstantiated guess.

I’m actually hoping Apple creates their own To Do list. Maybe there’s something in store in Leopard. Or, even something new coming out in the next version of iWork. Who knows?

But as you mentioning third-party apps, I’ve actually been one of the beta testers for OmniFocus and I just noticed that the latest version includes a web interface which allows you to access your contexts and inbox over the internet. I tried it out a little and its still really buggy, but it’s clearly made with the iPhone in mind. That could be a great thing.

Speaking of which — I actually went down to my local AT&T Cellular dealer tonight here in Santa Monica. It was amazing. Hundreds of people were in line and they sold out pretty quickly. But I did get to play around with one of the tester models. I’ve gotta say that even though I was getting pretty burned out on all of the hype, it really did live up to it. A lot more impressive in person than I thought. Much smaller than I thought, too.

Interesting that the latest beta of OmniFocus includes a web interface. Hmm… . Sounds like there could be some intriguing possibilities with OmniFocus and iPhone. I hadn’t even thought of iWork. Including a little to-do app that works on Mac/iPhone would be a clever move.

As I mentioned in the other iPhone post, the upcoming version of Mail seems to implement a To-Do list feature outside of iCal. Here’s hoping that the iPhone gets updated to take advantage of that feature because the current version of the Calendar app on the iPhone does not sync the To-Do’s from iCal.
