One of the best things you can do for your laptop is give it more RAM. Mac OS X 10.5 (”Leopard”) requires a minimum of 512MB of RAM, but 1GB will give you a noticeable performance boost. Current MacBooks and MacBook Pros support up to 4GB of RAM. So if you haven’t maxed out the RAM on your laptop yet, now may be the time to let interested parties know in time for the holidays.

RAM prices are hovering in the $30-$50 range per Gig, depending on the laptop and how much memory is on each DIMM (RAM module). Make sure you (or one of those interested parties) buys you the correct DIMM for your laptop. There are many RAM vendors, but I’ve had repeated success with Crucial.com. Their site has an excellent Memory Advisor, which lets you drill down to find the exact DIMM for your needs, and I’ve never had problems with their service.
