Tom, a 1L at the University of Wisconsin, made this inquiry:

I am envisioning some set of abbreviations, marks, symbols, etc., that are traditionally used to markup a case or other legal material. I have been sort of developing my own system to label facts, holdings, arguments for both sides, policies of the court, etc., but I am looking for other ideas and/or common methods of doing this so that I don’t have to reinvent the wheel if it has been invented already.

It’s an excellent question. In my 1L year I realized that the professors were talking less about the holdings than they were about the arguments on each side of the case, and started adjusting my book briefs accordingly. But a true system for marking up cases would be even better.
