Facebook or LinkedIn?

Several months ago I discovered belatedly that almost all of my 20-something classmates were on Facebook. But in contrast to my 30-something (and older) classmates, not that many of them were on LinkedIn.

Here’s the difference between the two: Facebook is a social networking site. It’s about friendships. LinkedIn is a business networking site. It’s about professional relationships. Yes, there is overlap. Facebook is moving into the professional networking space. But LinkedIn has been around since 2003. It’s huge and it’s growing fast.

LinkedIn is aimed squarely at professionals (like lawyers). One thing I’ve learned over the years is that your network is tremendously important as you develop your career. If you haven’t already signed up for LinkedIn, give it a spin. Feel free to check out my profile to see how a fully developed profile looks.

While you’re there, you may want to sign up for the Leadership for Lawyers group. The group was started by Robert Cullen, a professional mediator and professor at SCU Law. I took his Leadership for Lawyers class, and I found it extremely valuable. The group is open to students and practicing attorneys alike. Bob is currently writing a book on leadership, and he brings a lot of passion to the subject.

No, I’m not on the LinkedIn payroll, and Professor Cullen didn’t put me up to this either. I’ve just found LinkedIn to be a valuable professional resource, and I’m excited to see the Leadership for Lawyers group taking flight.
