West Drops the Ball with Online CLE
Online continuing legal education is a great tool for solo practitioners. Doubtless when some of us graduate, we’ll want to find a good online CLE provider so we can keep current with the profession and fulfill our Bar requirements.
Unfortunately one of the major players in online CLE decided that lawyers only use Internet Explorer + Windows. Michael R. Grossman was ready to give West LegalEdCenter his money, but was told that their CLE courses don’t work with Macs. They also require Internet Explorer. West is a heavy hitter in the law services field (anyone reading this use WestLaw?), so it is somewhat baffling that they would voluntarily annoy non-IE users and box out Mac users.
For one thing, Firefox and other Mozilla-based browsers have been chomping away at IE’s marketshare for some time. And while Mac users may constitute a small percentage of the overall lawyer user base, I wouldn’t be surprised if that percentage is higher in the solo practitioner and small firm market. At the very least, West probably just lost Mr. Grossman, not to mention Grant Griffiths, Ben Stevens, and a host of other Mac-using lawyers.
D’oh!
