Blacketter LLP has created a webapp specifically for timeline visualization and manipulation. I think this might have been useful during my Complex IP Litigation class last semester. It might also be valuable in real-world cases with complicated timelines.

TimelineIt is free, although a paid version with enhanced security is reportedly on the way.
